Matcha In The Media

Matcha green tea is certainly one that’s trending at the moment and is considered one of the hottest health foods. As such, Matcha has been getting a lot of attention in the media. In this post we will examine the spot featured on Good Morning America.

The GMA piece is very introductory in nature and highlights some of Matcha’s more notable attributes. So what is Matcha? Matcha is powdered, strikingly green in appearance and is becoming known to the west as a super food.

Adding to the craze is the fact that Matcha is popular with foodies on Instagram as well as Hollywood types. Stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Amanda Seyfried, and Cameron Diaz are consuming it. So what is driving the Matcha craze? It’s a combination of factors. For one, Matcha is an antioxidant-rich tea. In fact, it has ten times the antioxidant level of green tea. Second, its vibrant colors come from its chlorophyll content, which is very healthy and detoxifying. Matcha has twice the caffeine content of green tea making it comparable to coffee’s caffeine levels. Also, the caffeine boost is longer lived and doesn’t result in a crash like coffee. This is leading some to refer to Matcha as the “healthy espresso.” Furthermore, studies have shown that Matcha inhibits the growth of fat cells as well as boosts metabolism, illustrating that it might be a good weight management tool.

The GMA piece underscores Matcha’s versatility. It can just as easily be mixed in yogurt as sprinkled on to popcorn. This is something people are thoroughly exploring, as it has been the topic of numerous culinary discussions. One of the hosts noted that Match is a tea that does everything. But, the GMA didn’t cover Matcha’s L-Theanine content, which is an amino acid that promotes a calm but focused state of mind. Another thing the GMA omitted was that there are primarily two grades of Matcha commercially available — ceremony grade and non ceremony grade. Ceremony grade is of course the best quality.

There is a reverence and respect for the plant that seems to be lacking currently in its promotion. Matcha has been historically the star of the Japanese tea ceremony and is a time-honored beverage. It is not only a “super food” but also a “sacred food.” That said, we at Tea Vue we are excited to see interest in Matcha grow and if this type of publicity gets people to try it then that is terrific. Until next time, cheers!
